Co3 Launches, CDCWA Becomes Co3

From Arts Hub.

The Contemporary Dance Company of Western Australia launches today as  “Co3”.

The new brand embodies the past and future of contemporary dance in Western Australia. “Co” is an abbreviation of both company and contemporary, while the number “3” is representative of each part of the company: the professional dance ensemble and the company’s youth and education engagement and training programs.

Based in Perth, Western Australia, Co3 is the state’s flagship contemporary dance company, contributing a unique voice to the national cultural environment. The company was formed from the amalgamation of Buzz Dance Theatre (Buzz) and STEPS Youth Dance Company (STEPS) in May 2014, and maintains the legacy of high-quality engagement within the education, youth, and community sectors.

Co3’s first Artistic Director, Raewyn Hill, said, “We are thrilled to launch Co3 at today’s Celebrate WA gala. Co3 collaborates with Western Australian animator Boogie Monster, in a special performance for the opening of this year’s West Australian of the Year Awards.

“Set to iconic Perth band Birds of Tokyo’s “Lanterns” our dancers bring the cityscape of Perth to life, celebrating the growth of WA as a centre of contemporary excellence.”

Co3 is an artistic house producing contemporary dance by expert contemporary dancer-makers.  With an ensemble of dancers Co3 is a company of many creative voices, commissioning a variety of choreographers who create physically inspiring, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging work.

Ms Hill continued, “Driven by excellence and collaboration, Co3 is a contemporary organisation, generating contemporary conversations through dance.  The heart of our artistic program is delivered under the three principles, curate, commission and create.  We deliver expert work across three areas; our main stage performances, our youth ensemble, and our education unit.”

Co3’s professional dance ensemble will perform a range of newly curated, commissioned and created works. The dancers’ development will be supported through an elite performance culture and a sector leading physical training program.

Co3 will draw on dance artists, teaching artists, national and international guest tutors and Co3 performers to deliver its youth and education engagement programs. Co-Youth includes “Co-Labs”; intensive sessions that provide a broad range of activities for the company’s youth and junior ensemble participants. It also offers “Co-Training”; weekly ballet and contemporary tuition. Co-Educationoffers a variety of dance programs within the education sector, as well as intensive weeklong creative sessions during school holidays.

Executive Director, Aaron Beach, said, “I would like to thank everybody who has played a part in Co3’s launch. The support we have received has been critical in helping us create a solid foundation upon which to continue building a sustainable and successful company. Special thanks also to The Brand Agency who have collaborated with us to come up with “Co3”.

“Co3 reinvigorates the conversation about, and experience of, contemporary dance. The company supports and inspires the development of contemporary dance, dancers and dance culture. We hope that new supporters will join us on this journey.”

Minister for Culture and the Arts, John Day, said, “The official launch of Co3 represents a new beginning for contemporary dance in WA. Co3 will provide opportunities for both emerging and established dance professionals in WA and offer audiences innovative, contemporary dance experiences.”

Co3’s launch season runs from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November 2015 at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.
