Sally Richardson

Sally is one of WA’s most experienced & respected independent artists working across the performing arts. A director, writer, dramaturg and producer she is passionately committed to the creation of new work and developing collaborations with other artists in this region, championing the voice, artistry and presence of women in the performing arts.

Sally has been commissioned/worked for companies inc: Black Swan Theatre Company, Perth Theatre Company, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Deckchair Theatre, The Flying Fruitfly Circus, The National Institute of Circus Arts, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, WAAPA ECU, NAISDA, Performing Lines, with productions of her work awarded Helpmann, Green Room, Blue Room, Ausdance WA Awards, & slected for Dance Australia Critics Choice. Works have been presented at major arts festivals nationally; Sydney, Perth & Melbourne & internationally; Shanghai International Arts Festival, Beijing Dance Festival & Sao Paolo Festival.

Dance/theatre works include; the multi award winning The Drover’s Wives, Standing Bird & Standing Bird 2. Hybrid work Trigger Warning premiered in 2016 in a sold-out season produced by PLWA/PICA. In 2015 as an Asialink artist at Taipei International Artist Village she created The Ghost Project: JHIH, returning again by invitation in 2019 to exhibit as part of TAV/Asialink Arts 10th Anniversary exhibition Inner Space. She has directed/ produced dance films; The Drover’s Wives, Standing Bird 1 & 2, Mermaid X & Eliza & installation GUI SHU, exhibiting films nationally & internationally.

In 2018 she premiered dance/theatre works VOSS (Flesh & Bones) for Micromove/ pvi Kiss Club (PICA) and #thatwomanjulia with STRUT for NEXT, Move Me Festival at STCWA. In 2019 she showcased new works at Dance Massive Open Studio Program and premiered the Australian/Taiwan collaboration dance/theatre/film work 歸屬GUI SHU (belong) at PICA (produced by PLWA/PICA/Steamworks Arts)

Sally has developed, produced & toured over 30 original works through her company Steamworks Arts & is Artistic Director of MAXIMA Circus. 2018 productions include directing MEDEA for Black Swan Theatre Company, world premieres CATCH! (AWESOME Festival). Sally is part of Australia Council’s 2019-20 Arts Leaders program and is currently a PHD Candidate with WAAPA ECU.
