TOUR OVERVIEW

In February 2021, Co3 Contemporary Dance presented ARCHIVES OF HUMANITY at the State Theatre Centre of WA. Devised and directed by Artistic Director, Raewyn Hill and commissioned by Perth Festival, it celebrated community and explored ways individuals respond and care for each other in a crisis.

It featured an inter-generational cast of 21 dancers plus a remarkable set of over 1500 fabric birds hand-made by members of our WA community using their own recycled clothing. The creation of the set by community members was a concept developed by Raewyn Hill and Japanese sculptural artist Naoko Yoshimoto.

The intent was to collect from individuals their written stories reflecting the life of the garment, immigration and isolation during the evolving pandemic. The stories were then displayed on a wall for audiences to read as they entered the performance and the birds united, soared above as a collective symbol of endurance and hope.

WE ARE excited to share this experience to Regional WA through our FREE touring program called UNDER THE SAME SKY.

The tour is made up of three key elements: bird making workshops, dance workshops and a public screening of Raewyn Hill's ARCHIVES OF HUMANITY. Regional communities will have the opportunity to see this five-star, highly acclaimed world premiere production that captivated Perth audiences, and see how the birds formed an integral part of this new dance work.

BIRD MAKING WORKSHOPS

Suitable for beginner and advanced sewers, community members will be guided in a workshop to create a single bird made from their own donated piece of clothing. The finished bird can either be kept by the maker or form part of a community installation in your town. Participants will also have the opportunity to record their own story which can be shared in a local exhibition or submitted back to Co3 to join the archives of the production.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

  • Your garments (t-shirts or natural fibres work best)
  • Extra sewing machines (if available)
