Shaun Johnston
Shaun Johnston is a Perth / Boorloo-based actor, dancer, teaching artist and creator with a practice that incorporates acting, physical theatre, contemporary dance and martial arts. In 2025, Shaun presented The Scramble with STRUT Dance & The Blue Room Theatre, which fused freestyle wrestling with contemporary dance to explore male intimacy. The work won awards from TBRT and Performing Arts WA, with numerous nominations. Shaun starred in the multi-award-winning FAG/STAG (2025) by The Last Great Hunt, presented at the State Theatre Centre of WA and touring regionally; and he performed in & devised Passports (2025) by Undercurrent Theatre Company, an international collaboration across four countries.
In 2024, Shaun danced in Coalescing Towards, choreographed by Italian artist Michele Rizzo & presented by STRUT Dance in Perth Festival; he performed in FAKE by Mark Haslam, as part of the 2024 ISPA Congress. At the Blue Room Theatre, Shaun has acted in Performing Arts WA award-nominated Conception (2023), directed by Samuel Gordon Bruce; he both performed in and devised award-winning show My Shout (2021) with Undercurrent Theatre Company. In 2022, Shaun was a member of LINK Dance Company, performing in In Your God (James Welsby & Michael Whaites) and Something About Love (Sue Peacock). Since 2020, he has worked with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, performing and touring across WA while touring Blueback (2023) and Hare Brain (2020).
Shaun is the creator of Wrestling 2 Dance, a new partnering practice blending competitive wrestling, contact improvisation & contemporary dance, which he has taught across Australia for STRUT Dance, Zen Zen Zo and independently.
